Final-Stuff-Cover
The Stuff Issue takes on all things "stuff" from the objects we covet to the meaning behind their value.

The Magic Bus

By Beach Pictures

All of us are seeking something that material objects cannot seem to provide – a place of peace, fulfillment or true freedom. The Hollingsworth-Kruse family stopped just seeking and decided to take action. Samantha Kruse and Tom Hollingsworth, a Miami-based couple, cut all ties with the stuff they had on land and moved their family, 6 year old Mateo and 2 year old Harper, onto a home with wheels.

Their new home is a Greyhound bus that they reclaimed from a junkyard and outfitted to run on veggie oil. The interior was lovingly and painstakingly crafted by their own hands – including the compost toilet at the rear. The exterior was painted by a team of friends – the street artists known as the TM Sisters.

Their goal is to learn about sustainability by jumping in headfirst. Through trial and error they have already learned how to make iguana soup, how to reclaim a fallen palm tree to make hearts of palm salad, and how to rely on community to share the wisdom and support they need to continue their journey.

Ultimately, they are like many of us who feel unsettled and full of questions about what type of lifestyle makes the most sense for the happiness of our spirits and the health of our planet. As 2012 approaches that restlessness in some is starting to take on a tone of urgency.

Beach Pictures created this video portrait to introduce us to the Hollingsworth-Kruse family and to remind us of the seeker in each of us.
