This year the founder of Red Flag, Nicole Davis, will celebrate her birthday for a cause. The Black & White Party is our movement to raise awareness about the story of Lolita. Lolita is an orca that was taken from her mother, her family and her pod when she was less than 5 years old. She was brought from her native Northern Pacific habitat in the Puget Sound off the coast of Washington State to the warm waters and sunny climate of Miami, Florida. She was bought by the Miami Seaquarium where she has been living and performing in a small concrete tank for the past 45 years. Lolita has broken a world record : the longest any orca has been living in captivity. Efforts to retire Lolita have been ongoing for almost 2 decades. There is a plan in motion through the Orca Network and other supportive groups to create a humane home for her in the waters she was born. Last year a case brought to the judicial system by PETA granted Lolita her rightful endangered species status. It is now official that the Miami Seaquarium is violating the Endangered Species Act. The next case will be directly against their violation, at which point they will need to act in some way to remediate. Will they release her? Or will they simply create larger holding pen for her? This is what our movement will address. Join us on Wednesday Sept 24 to learn more or send your inquiries to nicole@redflagmag.org.
