SUMMARY:Leave No Trace Opening Party
DESCRIPTION:Red Flag.org presents “LEAVE NO TRACE”\, an art exhibition addressing the issue of extinction and featuring special commission works from Bhakti Baxter\, David Brooks\, Brian Butler\, N. Dash\, Benjamin Degen\, Mark Dion\, Jim Drain\, Christina Pettersson\, Rebeca Raney\, and Dana Sherwood. With three interactive bodies of work we will explore the story of our relationship to the great web of life.  \nWhen venturing into nature the ethos of every wilderness lover is to “Leave No Trace”. That means we should enter nature humbly\, carry out our trash and leave it the way we found it.  \nWhen we step out of nature and into modern civilization there are a new set of rules. To “civilize” is to tame what is wild – to re-organize\, re-design\, and leave our trace. In the process we are eradicating entire bloodlines of species from the planet and ironically leaving “no trace” of animals and habitats that were here for millennia before we arrived.  \nFor this exhibition Red Flag has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to raise awareness and funding that will go directly to their Central Florida land conservation project for the Florida Panther. The aim of the project is to expand habitat and access to habitat for the Florida Panther\, which was among the first animals to be listed on the U.S. Endangered Species List.  \nJoin us on Saturday October 24\, 2015 from 7-11pm for the opening of “LEAVE NO TRACE” at Swampspace (Design District) 3940 North Miami Avenue – Miami\, Florida 33127. We will have free drinks\, live performances\, opportunities to win a work of art and special performances by Camille Arroyo\, Mustafa Wright\, and Shira Lee of BaBa Yaga Art Wagon.  \nThroughout the exhibition calendar we will offer several free events. Stay informed through our events page.

SUMMARY:Black & White Party
DESCRIPTION:This year the founder of Red Flag\, Nicole Davis\, will celebrate her birthday for a cause. The Black & White Party is our movement to raise awareness about the story of Lolita. Lolita is an orca that was taken from her mother\, her family and her pod when she was less than 5 years old. She was brought from her native Northern Pacific habitat in the Puget Sound off the coast of Washington State to the warm waters and sunny climate of Miami\, Florida. She was bought by the Miami Seaquarium where she has been living and performing in a small concrete tank for the past 45 years. Lolita has broken a world record : the longest any orca has been living in captivity. Efforts to retire Lolita have been ongoing for almost 2 decades. There is a plan in motion through the Orca Network and other supportive groups to create a humane home for her in the waters she was born. Last year a case brought to the judicial system by PETA granted Lolita her rightful endangered species status. It is now official that the Miami Seaquarium is violating the Endangered Species Act. The next case will be directly against their violation\, at which point they will need to act in some way to remediate. Will they release her? Or will they simply create larger holding pen for her? This is what our movement will address. Join us on Wednesday Sept 24 to learn more or send your inquiries to nicole@redflagmag.org.
